Old Spaghetti Factory (WEM)
During dinner time on weekends, Bourbon Street in West Edmonton Mall is always very busy with queues outside every restaurant. On this occasion, I was told that it would be at least a 30 minute wait for a table at the Old Spaghetti Factory. I decided to get something to munch on while I waited, so I walked to the food court nearby and got a crepe from Crepeworks. I got back just in time to hear my name being called, so I think a lot of people must have gotten impatient with the wait and left. I actually got a table in 10 mins which wasn't bad at all.
I haven't visited the Old Spaghetti Factory for a while, so I forgot about the delicious sourdough bread served with plain and garlic butter. The bread was crusty with a soft and fluffy interior and a slight hint of sourness.
The best part about this restaurant is the all-included entree. Bread, minestrone soup or salad, a choice of entree, spumoni ice cream, and coffee or tea are all included for one low price of $10-$18 depending on the entree. I opted for minestrone soup because I wanted a hearty tomato broth and this certainly fit the bill.
I was a bit greedy with the entree and decided to get the manager's favourite ($11.25), spaghetti with a mix of two sauces from the menu. I chose tomato sauce and clam sauce, so it was a nice combination of tartness and creaminess. The spaghetti was a bit on the mushy side and not al dente as is typical of Italian cooking. It wasn't very good pasta, but it was comforting much like home cooking.
The spumoni ice cream wasn't very impressive either, and honestly I was too full to really enjoy this.
Dinner concluded with complimentary coffee or tea. The tea was served in store-bought teabags with hot water. I found the cup too strong and coarse, and would probably pass on this next time.
A meal at the Old Spaghetti Factory is not fancy or impressive by any means, but it is very filling and satisfying. It's a lot of food for a relatively cheap price. Where else can you get a 3 course meal for a bit over $10? So this place is an excellent choice in terms of value, but don't come here if you're looking for good food.
