Berry Good

August 05, 2012
Since Py was moving to Burnaby, we decided to meet up with Kish for dessert in Richmond before she left. Berry Good is a small Korean-owned cake shop located in the same strip mall as Top Gun J&C. It has been around for a few years and is gaining in popularity. The place has relatively short business hours:
  • Mon, Tue, Thu - 6 pm to 12 am
  • Fri, Sat - 2 pm to 12 am
  • Wed, Sun - CLOSED

I've heard a lot of positive comments about the cakes here. All of the cakes are baked fresh daily and displayed in a glass cabinet at the back of the store. Most of them cost $4.95 per slice, while a couple varieties are a bit more expensive at $5.45 per slice.

We all ordered from the drink and cake combo menu. The menu consists of a list of drinks in the $7 to $8 range which includes a choice of cake from the cabinet. I didn't want coffee or tea, so I chose something interesting called almond soy ($7.40). It was a combination of almond milk and soy milk. The piping hot drink was comforting and satisfying, but the taste was slightly odd. I think I still prefer these 2 types of milk separately.

I decided to try one of their new cheesecake flavours: the jasmine tea cheesecake. It turned out to be a smart choice as it was the best cake in my opinion. The delicate flavour of jasmine was fragrant but not overbearing and blended perfectly with the light cheese and chocolate sponge base.

Kish's tiramisu was probably the most disappointing. It tasted even worse than the one I had at a McCafe in Europe. The taste was very mild to the point that there was not much flavour apart from a faint coffee aroma. Both the cream and the cake were bland.

Py ordered the blueberry cheesecake which was more expensive because of the fresh blueberries on top. But the blueberry flavour in the cake was so dominating that I couldn't really taste the other components such as the chocolate sponge base, the cheese and the whipped cream topping.

One of the main selling points of this cake shop is that the ingredients are mostly organic and high quality. While I appreciate that, I think the food still has to taste good and the blueberry cheesecake and tiramisu were not particularly impressive. I really liked my jasmine tea cheesecake though, and I heard some of their other cakes like the noir blanc are very tasty, so I'll probably come back for dessert sometime.
