Chicken World (Vancouver)

April 13, 2012
Chicken World is a shabby-looking store on the corner of Knight and E. 49th Ave. To be honest, I didn't have high hopes because I tend to judge a store by its appearance. I felt slightly relieved that at least the place was not empty. There were a couple other people inside waiting for take-out. I think it's mainly a take-out joint due to the limited seating.

I bought 10 pieces of chicken (legs and thighs: $14.99, mixed: $17.99) and it was around a 10 minute wait since they made it fresh to order. The chicken was piping hot with a thin crispy layer of skin and very little fat between the skin and meat. I enjoyed the golden fried drumsticks and thighs with a warm cup of lemon coke. (Coke boiled with lemon slices may be a strange concept to some, but it's a common drink in HK and is offered in most HK style cafes. It really helps with digestion.) Ahhh such a satisfying meal!

So this just goes to show that appearances can be deceiving. I'll probably come back again when I find myself craving fried chicken.

Note: According to a sign taped to the window, this establishment offers halal meat.

  1. Making your chicken fresh to order is an excellent sign!

  2. @pyaria: They don't really have a choice... Not enough turnover for them to have the chicken pre-fried.

  4. @Cakebrain: The place looks a bit sketchy, but the chicken is really not bad.

  5. Wow, haha, the name of the shop really caught my eye. Looks like I'll have to give this place a shot. Some of the smaller fried chicken places can be surprisingly good. One of my favourites is L.A. Chicken, formerly Lee's Chicken. Damn...hungry now.

  6. @Peter: LOL Chicken World doesn't sound all that strange, but I have this tendency to translate names into Chinese... "雞世界"! And then I laughed my head off.

  8. @sweetsamsations: I wonder why KFC is so popular... I find their fried chicken really soggy (both the skin and the meat). I remember KFC being quite good back in the days, but the quality has really deteriorated.

Yea give this place a try! It's not spectacular, but it's better than KFC in my opinion.
